“Many people used to remember boat holidays on the River Lagan. As a young boy growing up in the Low Road area of Hilden, I often played with my pals along the river. As MP for Lagan Valley, I want to see serious investment in the Lagan canal and river. The Lagan Canal especially needs major investment as it is the untapped jewel in the Lagan Valley crown. The canal winds through some of the most beautiful countryside in Northern Ireland.
I think there’s the tremendous potential to seek tourists and leisure activities and enhance our environment that we already have. There are even some jewels within that crown – we have Union locks, which was the only staircase lock on the island of Ireland in its heyday, which about 60 years ago saw its last boat travel this way. I think we need to exploit what we have in Lagan Valley. When I’m returned as MP on 8th June, it will be a priority to see the famous Lagan Canal opened and operating again, so vote Robbie Butler X.”
