“A lot of young people don’t vote because they don’t think politicians can do anything for them. I want to change this attitude in young people and get them more involved in politics. I’ve been working on this since I became an elected representative. Traditionally, between 40% and 50% of the Northern Ireland population don’t even vote and a big proportion of that are young people because they feel disaffected and not connected to politics and politicians.
As an MP, I want to change that; I want to see that narrative absolutely abolished. I’ve been actively targeting the 18 to 30 age band at my ‘Coffee and Craic’ nights because its somewhere where I can learn from them. I have two ears and one mouth so I want to listen twice as hard to the young people, so on 8th June Vote Butler X and let the youth vote be heard.”
